The Dispatch: January 2026

Join us in investing where it matters

By Brian Skelton, President and CEO

Happy New Year, Baldwin County! I hope those Resolutions are coming along nicely. The turn of the calendar brings each of us an opportunity to reflect, consider new possibilities, and focus on what truly matters. While the process may look drastically different depending on who you ask, I believe the health of our families, homes, and community takes priority for many, including Riviera Utilities.

Each year, our Board of Directors approves more than $400,000 of donations and sponsorships for local organizations whose efforts cover the entirety of our service area. Every donation, no matter the amount, supports one of the following six categories of local impact: Educational Programs and Activities; Arts, Culture, and Humanities; Environmental Stewardship; Health and Human Services; Economic Development; and Community Enhancement.

Whether sponsoring your favorite community cook-off or sprucing up a local playground, Riviera’s investments are rooted in the community we serve.  That’s the advantage of being a public, not-for-profit utility — our resources are managed locally and reinvested where they matter most.

And we don't stop there. In 2025, Riviera employees volunteered at various charitable events, including the Coastal Cleanup, Baldwin Heart Walk, United Way Day of Caring, and Delta Woods and Waters Expo, among others.  In 2026, we invite each of you to join us in our mission to strengthen Baldwin County by building connections, donating your time, and leading positive change throughout our community.

Current Status

We're excited to share the latest on the Magnolia landfill plant and how it’s contributing to cleaner, local energy for our community! The renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at the Magnolia Landfill remains an innovative partnership that captures methane gas from waste and converts it into pipeline-quality RNG — a clean, sustainable form of natural gas. Here’s what that means for our customers:

  • Local energy from local resources: The RNG produced at Magnolia is delivered through the natural gas system we manage, helping fuel homes right here in our community.

  • Renewable energy scale: Based on the average monthly gas use of a residential home with a full gas load, the RNG plant generates enough renewable natural gas to supply 4,412 residential homesessentially covering the entire area south of County Road 20.

Stay tuned for more updates as the facility continues to deliver environmental and community benefits!

Ways to save & find relief this year:

Saving on your utility bill doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, consistent choices throughout the year can add up to meaningful savings. Simple steps like adjusting your thermostat seasonally, sealing air leaks, using energy-efficient lighting, running full loads of laundry and dishes, and being mindful of water use can help keep costs manageable month after month. Monitoring your usage can also provide more predictable bills and fewer surprises.

We also understand that even with careful planning, tough times happen. If you or your family ever need extra support, help is available right here in Baldwin County. Assistance programs like Ecumenical Ministries’ Baldwin County Utility Relief Fund and LIHEAP through Community Action of South Alabama are designed to provide temporary relief during challenging periods.

These resources exist to support our neighbors, and we encourage customers to reach out if they need a helping hand. Saving where you can — and knowing where to turn when you need it — can make a real difference throughout the year.

Copy That? Quick Hits & Updates

  • Safety representatives from Baldwin County's growing municipalities are now meeting quarterly to share resources, training opportunities, and collaborate on community safety initiatives. The Baldwin County Safety Alliance aims to establish a clear line of communication among local utilities, contractors, and municipalities through shared experiences.

  • Power outages? Don’t forget: Riviera Utilities electric customers will be able to simply text "OUT" to 251-943-4999 to report service interruptions. The RU Text Outage System is designed to bring a bit more ease to reporting issues as they arise.

  • Start the new year with peace of mind by checking one important item off your list: your carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure each detector is working properly, replace the batteries if needed, and confirm you have one installed near sleeping areas and on every level of your home. It’s a small step that helps protect your home and family.
