(Foley, AL.) – On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, The Utilities Board of the City of Foley experienced a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) at the OWA Lift Station. A bypass pump hose failed and allowed untreated wastewater to flow onto the ground. The site is in a remote location away from public access. The SSO was observed at 734 a.m. by RU personnel and stopped shortly thereafter.
1. Volume: Range of 75,000-100,000 gallons.
2. Destination: Overflowed near a drainage ditch which ultimately connects to Wolf Creek.
A copy of the data submitted to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for this event is attached for reference.
The Utilities Board of the City of Foley responds to overflows in a manner consistent with state and federal standards. We urge residents to exercise caution using these associated bodies of water for recreational purposes, thoroughly cook any fish or seafood caught in these areas, and thoroughly wash their hands after handling any fish or seafood from these areas.
