(Foley, AL.) - On Sunday, August 3, 2025, the Utilities Board of the City of Foley experienced a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) due to equipment failure at the Wolf Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Foley, Alabama. The incident occurred during an afternoon thunderstorm that resulted in 3" of rain measured at the Plant. During heavy rains, excessive stormwater flows are diverted to the stormwater basin located onsite and then routed through the WWTP once the flows have subsided. When the flow diversion was made, the manhole used for this was hydraulically overloaded, resulting in the SSO. This allowed untreated wastewater to overflow the sanitary sewer manhole. Responding crews promptly cleaned and disinfected the area.
1. Volume: 4,500 gallons
2. Destination: While most was contained onsite, some flow from the manhole made its way to Wolf Creek.
A copy of the data submitted to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for this event is attached for reference.
