Daphne, AL — Riviera Utilities is proud to announce a collaborative effort with the YMCA of South Alabama to refresh and improve the playground at the Daphne YMCA — creating a safer, more welcoming space for local children and families.

The playground had not undergone major updates in more than a decade, aside from periodic mulch replacement and the addition of a gaga pit. A large tree that once provided shade had become a safety concern following several storms, and exposed roots posed a tripping hazard for children at play.

Riviera’s Vegetation Management team safely removed the tree to eliminate the risk. Chris Francis Tree Care then provided stump grinding services at no cost, ensuring the area was fully cleared. Riviera crews installed new border trim around the playground, backfilled the space with fresh mulch, and graded the area to improve drainage and prevent future erosion.

Additionally, SiteOne Landscape Supply generously offered a discount on the mulch materials, further exemplifying the spirit of partnership behind the project.

“On behalf of the YMCA of South Alabama, I would like to sincerely thank Riviera Utilities for their generous support and dedication in upgrading our playground,” said Gwen Sommer, CEO of the YMCA of South Alabama. “Their team went above and beyond by cleaning and mulching the play areas and installing new trim, creating a safer and more inviting space for our children and families. Partnerships like this reflect a true commitment to community, and we are deeply grateful for Riviera Utilities’ continued investment in the families we serve.”

The effort holds special meaning for Stephen Sullivan, who serves both as Director of Governmental Affairs and Economic Development for Riviera Utilities and as a member of the YMCA Board of Directors. As a father whose children have attended the YMCA’s summer programs for years, Sullivan has witnessed firsthand the impact the organization has on local families.

“The YMCA has been an important part of my family’s life for many years,” Sullivan said. “My children have grown up in these programs — learning, playing, and building friendships that will last a lifetime. As both a YMCA Board member and a representative of Riviera Utilities, I’m incredibly grateful we could come together to improve a space that means so much to so many families. This project is a testament to what can happen when community partners step up to invest in our children’s future.”

Since Riviera completed its work, the YMCA has added a new concrete slab to further enhance the outdoor space. Plans include installing a shade structure over the slab to provide a comfortable place for children to gather and eat lunch during the summer months.

This playground refresh reflects a broader mission shared by Riviera Utilities and the YMCA: Strengthening the community by investing in facilities and programs that support families. When local organizations, businesses, and volunteers come together, the result is more than just improved infrastructure — it is a stronger, safer, and more vibrant community for the next generation.
