We went looking for our history.
We found it everywhere.
What started with a collection of old photo albums became a map of 110 years across Baldwin County.
It started with the albums.
Since 1916, Riviera has grown right alongside our community — leaving behind 110 years of history beneath our feet, in our backyards, and all across Baldwin County.
When we started looking back, we found ourselves flipping through decades-old photo albums filled with photographs of Riviera crews at work, roads and neighborhoods we still recognize, and places that have changed so much they took a little longer to find.
Alongside the photographs were handwritten notes, carefully recording names, dates, roads, job sites, businesses, and small details about what was happening in each frame.
We don't know who wrote those notes, but the more pages we turned, the more important they became.
They told us where to find it.
The handwriting was so distinct, and so much a part of the albums themselves, that we recreated it completely in-house as a custom font — allowing the same handwriting that helped preserve Riviera's history to help us tell it 110 years later.
But the notes gave us more than a way to tell the story. They gave us places to start looking.
A road name beneath a photograph could lead us back to an intersection. A business could help us recognize a part of town. A neighborhood name could turn an old construction photo into a place where people still live today.
As we followed those clues across Baldwin County, we realized we weren't just looking at photographs of places that used to be here. Much of that history was still right outside our doors.
One place at a time.
Using those details, we began placing the photographs back where they belonged. One by one, roads, neighborhoods, job sites, offices, substations, and familiar landmarks became points on a map, revealing a much bigger picture of how Riviera and Baldwin County have grown together over the last 110 years.
That became the interactive map at the heart of this project, created completely in-house to let you explore Riviera's history in the places where it actually happened. Some points mark major moments. Others are simply glimpses of crews at work on an ordinary day decades ago. Together, they tell a story that no single timeline could.

The records tell part of the story. The people who were there tell the rest.
Riviera employees past and present have watched these communities grow, worked through the storms that changed them, built and maintained the systems that serve them, and carried memories that never made it into a photograph.
While a lot has changed since 1916, what it means to be a public utility hasn't. As a locally owned, not-for-profit utility, our focus has always been right here at home: Serving our customers, investing in our community, and making life better.
We may never know who carefully placed those photographs into albums or wrote the details beside them. But because they did, 110 years later, we were able to pick up where they left off — following their notes back to the roads, neighborhoods, and communities that are still part of Riviera's story today.
