SSO 3/2

(Foley, AL.) – On Thursday, March 2, 2023, The Utilities Board of the City of Foley experienced a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO). The power wiring from the motor control center (MCC) to the UV Disinfection system at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) shorted to ground. A generator was set up to operate the UV disinfection system until the power wiring is replaced. During the time the UV Disinfection system was not operating (intermittently between 11:30 am to 4:30 pm), approximately 300,000 gallons of treated, filtered effluent passed through the WWTP and discharged to Wolf Creek through the permitted outfall. This was not a discharge of raw, untreated sewage.

A copy of the data submitted to the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for this event is attached for reference.

The Utilities Board of the City of Foley responds to overflows in a manner consistent with state and federal standards. We urge residents to exercise caution using these associated bodies of water for recreational purposes, thoroughly cook any fish or seafood caught in these areas, and thoroughly wash their hands after handling any fish or seafood from these areas.

If you have questions regarding this SSO, please call us at (251) 943-5001.
