Carbon Monoxide
Carbon Monoxide is a toxic and odorless gas, which is produced when any fuel, such as charcoal, gasoline,
or wood is burned. If natural gas equipment is not maintained, adjusted, and operated properly, it could produce carbon monoxide.
Carbon Monoxide is dangerous because it interferes with the body's ability to process oxygen. If a large
amount of Carbon Monoxide is absorbed by red blood cells from the lungs, it will replace oxygen in the bloodstream.
Although not standard items in most homes, Carbon Monoxide alarms can be found at your local hardware store.
These alarms operate and appear similar to fire detection devices such as fire alarms and should be placed within
the home as per manufacturers recommendations.
Symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning are:
Headaches, Dizziness, Flu-like symptoms, Weakness, Nausea and Vomiting, partial loss of muscle control, and Sleepiness.
The most common sources of Carbon Monoxide accumulation in the home include but is not limited to:
Blocked chimney opening
Improperly operating fuel burning appliances
Disconnected, corroded, or blocked appliance vent pipes
Cracked furnace heat exchangers
Operating vehicles in attached garages
If you think someone is suffering from Carbon Monoxide poisoning, get the person to fresh air immediately
and call 911 for emergency help. Be sure to open doors and windows to ventilate the area. Call Riviera Utilities
